Fanny Mendelssohn
Fanny Mendelssohn was a gifted pianist and composer whose songs and piano works reveal a strong Romantic voice that was long overshadowed by social expectations and by the fame of her brother Felix.
Fanny Mendelssohn composed seriously even when nineteenth-century society offered her far fewer public opportunities than her brother.

Life and Story
Fanny Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg in 1805 and grew up in Berlin in the same highly educated musical household as her younger brother Felix Mendelssohn. She received excellent musical training and showed remarkable ability at the keyboard and in composition. Social expectations for women of her class, however, limited the possibility of a public professional career. Much of her music was performed in private Sunday concerts held by the Mendelssohn family. Several early songs were published under Felix’s name, and only later did Fanny begin publishing some works under her own name. Her compositions include more than four hundred pieces, especially songs and piano miniatures. The piano cycle Das Jahr, inspired by travel and the months of the year, is one of her most substantial works. Fanny died suddenly in Berlin in 1847.
Musical Style
Her music often uses lyrical melody, rich harmony and detailed piano texture. Songs and piano pieces can move from intimate simplicity to technically demanding Romantic writing.

Era and Contemporaries
Fanny worked in the same early Romantic environment as Felix Mendelssohn and Schumann, but social restrictions shaped her career very differently.
