Life and Story

Bedřich Smetana was born in Litomyšl, Bohemia, in 1824. He showed musical ability early and later studied in Prague, where he worked as a pianist, teacher and composer. Political and cultural movements in nineteenth-century Bohemia strongly influenced his artistic goals. Smetana wanted Czech language, history and dance to have a central place in serious concert and theatrical music. He became closely associated with the development of Czech opera, especially through The Bartered Bride. His cycle of six symphonic poems Má vlast includes Vltava, a musical portrait of the river that flows through Prague. In his later years Smetana became completely deaf, yet he continued to compose important music. He died in Prague in 1884 and is remembered as a foundational figure in Czech national music.

Musical Style

Folk-inspired dances, lyrical melody and programmatic storytelling are important. His orchestral writing can suggest motion, scenery and historical atmosphere while remaining strongly structured.

Why Are They Important?

Smetana gave Czech opera and orchestral music a lasting national identity and prepared the way for composers such as Dvořák.

Why Study This Composer?

Smetana helps students hear program music, dance rhythm and recurring themes. Vltava is especially useful for learning how a musical idea can represent a landscape and change as the story develops.

What Can a Student Learn?

Students learn to connect musical changes with narrative ideas, recognize dance rhythms and follow themes as they return in new forms.

Era and Contemporaries

Smetana worked during the growth of Czech cultural nationalism in the nineteenth century. Dvořák belonged to the next major generation of Czech composers.
